10th Abstinence Awareness Week Celebrated

March 1st marked the beginning of the 10th Annual celebration of Abstinence Awareness Week in Washington, DC.  Youth at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Urban Life Training STAR Leadership Club informed students about Abstinence Awareness Week by creating posters and giving students "Abstinence Cards: attached to lollipops.  The following week, several new students came to a Panel Discussion hosted by the Club.  In a video filmed and edited by Club members, Duke Ellington Peer Counselor Kyana shared:

"I definitely think that sexual abstinence is a great course to teach while we are still in high school and while we are still young.  This Club mainly focuses on 9th and 10th graders.  So at that time in your life, that's  an important step.  Having sex in high school is a really major thing.  It can effect the most important stages of your life.  You can mess it up in high school, and it will just be done, just like that."

One of the items still remaining on the agenda will be the formation of a Right Choices Youth Prevention Corps that emphasizes sexual abstinence.  Unfortunately, a request from the Duke Ellington students for a meeting with Mayor Muriel Bowser was not granted.  See here for the Right Choices Youth Prevention Corps proposal./a>
